Among popular deep-sky-imaging targets, the Vela Nebula must rank right up there with the Orion Nebula. But seldom is it captured in such a wide-field view as this one. Nor is it commonly done in HOx true color as is this one. The “x” means that I did not enter any values into the blue channel.

My true-color mapping accounts for the fact that H is not the endmember red in the sRGB color space, nor is the O the blue endmember nor the green endmember. Additionally, Hb is, as far as I know, always associated with Ha in interstellar nebulae. Hence, the H and O alone access much of the rainbow, if not all the sRGB color space, as this picture attests. If your eyes could only see emissions from H and O in the visible spectrum, the nebula would look something like this.

A few words on processing this image; The pixel resolution was only about 6.3 arc seconds, but with 30+ subs/filter, the collection supported 3x drizzle nicely. Obviously, that made for a large image file (13,480 pixels wide), which I cannot share here, but would be a great base for a medium size print. Something in the 40’’ wide range, maybe--on aluminum?

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
